Pandemic boosts cosmetic surgery in South Korea

Much of the world is waiting for vaccines to wind down the global health crisis in 2021.

전 세계 많은 국가들이 백신을 기다리고 있습니다. 이를 통해 2021년에는 코로나 19로 인한 글로벌 위기가 해소되기를 바라고 있습니다. 

But for some South Koreans, it's a deadline to reshape their face and recover behind a mask.

그러나 일부 한국 사람들에게 있어 성형 수술을 받고 회복 중인 얼굴을 마스크로 가릴 수 있는 마지막 기회이기도 합니다.

A face mask mandate in the country and working from home has fueled a boom for South Korea's famous cosmetic surgery clinics.

한국에서 시행 중인 마스크 의무 착용과 재택 근무 덕분에 한국의 유명한 성형외과가 더욱 호황을 누리게 되었습니다.

20-year-old student Ryu Ha-na shelled out thousands of dollars to have her nose job done in December.

대학생인 류하나(20세)씨는 코 성형에 수백 만원을 지출했습니다.

Ryu took her courses online throughout 2020.

류 씨는 2020년 내내 온라인 수업을 들었습니다.

And while she still can, she wants to recuperate at home and go out in public without drawing attention. 

아직 할 수 있을 때, 집에서 회복하면서 외출할 때도 시선을 끌지 않겠다는 생각입니다.

South Korea is a world capital of plastic surgery even during non-pandemic times.

한국은 코로나 19 이전에도 전 세계 성형의 메카였습니다. 

And industry data shows it was worth about 10 billion US dollars last year.

업계 자료에 따르면 한국의 성형 시장 규모는 작년 약 100억 달러였다고 합니다.

But Ryu's surgeon Park Cheol-woo says there's been a recent surge of interest.

하지만 류 씨를 수술한 박철우 씨는 최근에 관심이 크게 늘었다고 합니다.

And government data shows that over 10 percent of South Korea's emergency stimulus payments were spent on hospitals and pharmacies, just behind supermarkets and restaurants.

게다가 정부 자료에 따르면 재난 지원금의 10%이상이 병원과 약국에서 쓰였는데요, 슈퍼마켓과 식당을 제외하면 가장 지출이 많았던 곳들입니다.

This surgery boom may end up as a short-lived spark, however.

그러나 현재의 성형 붐은 반짝 열풍으로 끝날 수도 있습니다.

South Korea's recently struggled with the third virus wave with daily case numbers breaking records.

한국은 최근 코로나19 3차 유행으로 몸살을 앓고 있는데요, 매일 감염자 수가 최고치를 경신하고 있는 상황입니다.

Ryu's surgeon Park says he's seen a number of recent cancellations by his clients as people stay inside to ride out the wave. 

류씨를 수술한 박철우 씨는 고객들이 최근 예약을 취소하고 있다고 밝혔습니다. 코로나 대유행을 피해 외출을 삼가고 있기 때문입니다.
