지난 6월 유튜브가 개최한 온라인 가상 졸업식 "Dear Class of 2020"에 참여한 인권운동가이자 최연소 노벨평화상 수상자인 말랄라 유사프자이의 축사에 관한 기사입니다.

파키스탄 출신 말랄라는 파키스탄탈레반에 맞서 여성과 어린이의 교육을 위해 활동한 공로로 2014년 역대 최연소로 노벨평화상을 받았습니다.

그녀는 이번 가상 졸업식에서 교육의 기회를 박탈당한 개도국 소녀들의 입장을 대변하였습니다.

말랄라 역시 2020년 영국 옥스포드 대학 학위를 마친 졸업생 중 한명입니다.

Education activist Malala Yousafzai asked America's 3 million high school graduates, as they go out and change the world, to not forget girls in developing countries who will be deprived of an education due to Covid-19.

교육 활동가 말랄라 유사프자이는 미국 3백만명의 고등학교 졸업생들에게 사회에 나가 세상을 바꾸게되면 코로나19로 인해 교육의 기회를 박탈당할 개도국 소녀들을 잊지 말라고 부탁했습니다.

She said girls in developing countries would be forced into early marriages or low-paying jobs to support their families and would not be able to return to school when they reopen.

그녀는 개도국 소녀들이 가족 부양을 위해 조기 결혼이나 저임금 일자리를 강요당하게 되어 학교가 다시 문을 열어도 다시 돌아갈 수 없게 될 것이라고 말했습니다.

She added the calss of 2020 wouldn't be defined by what they lost due to the virus, but by how they responded.

그녀는 2020년 졸업생들은 바이러스로 잃은 것이 아닌 바이러스에 어떻게 대응했느냐로 평가받게 될 것이라고 덧붙였습니다.

The Nobel Prize laureate also missed her graduation ceremony, after studying at Oxford University.

옥수포드 대학에서 학위를 마친 노벨 평화상 수상자 그녀 역시 졸업식을 하지 못했습니다.
